Why Not Use ASSJ?

If he's stronger, than he probably wouldn't care that much about his power.

Also, Trunks seems to think SSJ Vegeta would be more than enough to handle Supressed-Semi Perfect Cell when Vegeta goes straight to ASSJ putting the SSJ's much higher than that Semi-Cell.

It doesn't put them much higher. Trunks is just surprised that Vegeta "used it already" which is the direct quote. He still expected him to have to use it, but he thought he might try his luck as a SSJ.

Yeah, Trunks's specific wording is "right off the bat," which actually puts SSJ Vegeta at around rivaling range or so.

I don't think Cell had a huge advantage over Goku post-both of them powering up. Probably something close to a 1.1X advantage.
That's actually a pretty large gap. Stomp-worthy even, if going by Saiyan Arc Goku VS Vegeta's gap.
